Court Fines Individual 5 Million Won for Spreading False “IU Spy” Claims

Agency Confirms Legal Action Against 96 Malicious Commenters

A court has imposed a 5 million KRW fine on an individual who distributed printed leaflets falsely accusing singer and actress IU of being a North Korean spy.

According to a statement released by her agency, EDAM Entertainment, legal proceedings have been ongoing against individuals who spread malicious content targeting the artist. The company confirmed that 96 people were subject to criminal complaints and civil lawsuits last year for defamation, false rumor distribution, harassment, and sexual misconduct online.

The fine relates to a case in which pamphlets were reportedly scattered in a residential apartment complex parking area in 2023. The leaflets contained fabricated allegations, including claims that IU was linked to espionage activities and political corruption. The accusations were entirely unfounded.

Court Also Awards 30 Million KRW in Separate Defamation Case

In another case, a person who publicly accused IU of plagiarism and filed criminal complaints against her for alleged copyright violations was ordered to pay 30 million KRW in damages. The court fully granted IU’s request for compensation in a civil suit for emotional distress.

Meanwhile, another individual who repeatedly posted false allegations involving serious crimes and nationality-related rumors received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. The court also placed the individual under probation.

Ongoing Investigations and International Legal Steps

EDAM Entertainment confirmed that additional cases remain under investigation. Legal action has been taken against certain YouTube accounts accused of spreading defamatory content. In one case involving a user on Threads, the agency has initiated legal procedures in a U.S. court to obtain identifying information.

The company also revealed that recent incidents involved individuals approaching IU’s residence and workplace, allegedly threatening safety and demanding money. Several of those cases have reportedly been referred to the police.

Agency Vows Zero Tolerance

In its statement, EDAM Entertainment emphasized that there will be no settlements or leniency for individuals who threaten the artist’s safety or reputation.

The agency said it continues to monitor major portals and social media platforms in addition to reviewing reports from fans. It added that further updates will be provided as legal proceedings conclude.

IU remains one of South Korea’s most prominent entertainers, known for her dual career in music and acting. Her agency reiterated its commitment to protecting her from malicious behavior both online and offline.
