Super Junior’s Shindong Opens up About Family Estrangement and Financial Loss

Super Junior member Shindong shared deeply personal stories about his family during the latest episode of the Disney+ variety show Fortune War 49, drawing sympathy from viewers with his candid confession about estrangement from his parents and past financial hardship.

A reading that led to unexpected revelations

Episode 8 of the program, released on February 25, featured the remaining six fortune tellers giving one-on-one readings to celebrity guests. Shindong received a consultation from fortune teller Seolhwa, who immediately brought up the presence of a shaman in his family.

It was later revealed that his paternal grandmother had indeed been a shaman, surprising both the cast and the audience. The reading continued with comments about inherited spiritual energy and his natural path as a performer, reinforcing the idea that singing and dancing are the roles best suited to him.

The show also recalled a past moment when Shindong warned a girl group to “be careful,” after which dating news involving the group broke, adding to the mystique surrounding his intuition.

Business opportunities and financial caution

During the session, Seolhwa told Shindong that his business luck had begun to open up, which aligned with the fact that he had received a real business proposal while filming the program last year.

However, she also warned him to be careful with money, saying there were strong signs of unexpected financial loss. She suggested that rather than running a hands-on food business, he would be better suited to taking the role of an owner.

Shindong revealed that he had actually been preparing to enter the food and beverage industry at the time, making the reading even more striking.

Health concerns connected to family history

The fortune teller also asked about neurological illness in his family. Shindong confirmed that his grandfather had been diagnosed with dementia, prompting concern from the panel.

Although she noted that he had not directly inherited the condition, she advised him to avoid overwork and pay closer attention to his health.

A painful confession about his mother

The most emotional moment came when Seolhwa spoke about a strong maternal figure trying to carry the burden of the family.

Shindong then revealed that his mother had lost the family’s entire fortune due to a failed investment in 2015. He added that their relationship later became strained over financial issues.

“I’m being honest — I’m not in contact with my parents right now because of money,” he said. “When I gave them living expenses, they asked for a large amount at once instead of monthly support. That money was lost due to scams or bad investments.”

The confession created a heavy atmosphere in the studio and highlighted the personal struggles behind his bright on-screen image.

Loneliness and his desire for marriage

Seolhwa suggested that people in such situations often long for a second family. Shindong admitted that he does feel that sense of loneliness and noted that he has frequently spoken about wanting to get married. He also revealed that he once came close to doing so.

Through the reading, viewers saw not only the entertainer known for his humor but also a son carrying the weight of family conflict, financial loss and the search for emotional stability.
