Sunye Reflects on Losing Her Father During Wonder Girls’ U.S. Promotions

On the February 27 episode of KBS2’s ‘Fun-Staurant’, Sunye appears as a new “chef” cast member, sharing her daily life as a mother of three. Alongside her cooking segments, she also speaks candidly about the emotional hardships she experienced in her early 20s.

A Sudden Loss During a Busy Career Peak

In 2009, Wonder Girls were actively promoting in the United States, marking a historic chapter for K-pop. During that time, Sunye received news that her father was critically ill.

She shared that her father had lived for nearly 20 years with severely limited lung function before his organs gradually failed. “While I was in the U.S., I was told he was in critical condition,” she said. “I remember desperately hoping he could hold on.” Family members recalled that Sunye called from abroad, expressing her wish for her father to keep fighting. However, despite those hopes, he eventually passed away.

Processing Grief at a Young Age

At the time, Sunye was only 20 years old. She had already experienced the loss of her grandfather, and losing her father soon after left her emotionally shaken. She described that period as one where she felt mentally overwhelmed, especially while continuing her career under intense public attention.

During the episode, Sunye becomes emotional as her aunt shares memories and a final message her father had left before his passing. Hearing the story for the first time, Sunye was visibly moved.

The Family Who Stood By Her

Sunye also expressed deep gratitude toward her aunt and uncle, who have remained by her side. “They’re like another mother and father to me,” she said, acknowledging the support system that helped her endure the loss.

Now returning to television through ‘Fun-Staurant’, Sunye reflects not only on her past as a K-pop star but also on the personal resilience shaped by family, grief, and growth.
