In the high-pressure world of global pop, “vibes” often speak louder than data. As BTS’s 5th studio album, Arirang, continues to dominate the charts in April 2026, famed American producer Tyler Spry has opened up about the subtle, almost accidental moment he knew the lead single “SWIM” was destined for greatness.
According to Spry, the secret weapon wasn’t a high-tech marketing plan it was a quiet melody hummed by V (Kim Taehyung) in a studio lounge.
In a recent deep-dive interview with Billboard, Spry reflected on the challenging creative process behind Arirang. He admitted that the team spent weeks struggling to find the right direction.

“Some tracks felt too ‘pop,’ too similar to the early English hits like ‘Dynamite’ or ‘Butter,'” Spry explained. The goal was to find something fresher and more experimental. This led to the birth of “SWIM,” a track Spry describes as “subtle and understated.”
Because “SWIM” relied on an atmospheric, addictive groove rather than explosive high notes or dynamic shifts, the production team was actually nervous about its potential. “Everyone was a bit afraid of this song,” Spry confessed. “It didn’t have that obvious ‘megahit’ feel initially.”
The moment of clarity came two weeks into the writing process. Spry recalled heading to the lounge for a coffee when he caught V in a private moment.
“Taehyung was humming ‘SWIM, SWIM’ to himself. He didn’t even realize I was listening. In that moment, I thought, ‘Oh, this is it. This song is going to be huge.’ If it stays in his head like that, it’ll stay in everyone’s.”
What makes V such a “producers’ muse” in 2026 is his ability to elevate a track without oversinging. While the New York Times recently praised V for having the “most passionate and powerful voice” on the album, Spry’s story highlights V’s tonal gravity.

V doesn’t just sing a song; he lives in it. By humming the melody in his downtime, he proved the “stickiness” of the track. Spry’s favorite memory from the sessions wasn’t a technical breakthrough, but a day of “creative freedom” spent jumping around and singing with V, James Essien, and Sean Foreman. That raw, joyful energy is exactly what fans are hearing in the final record.
