Before Single’s Inferno became one of Netflix’s most talked-about dating shows, Jeon Somi apparently came surprisingly close to becoming part of it herself.
In a recent story she shared, Somi revealed that during the show’s casting period, she noticed a Single’s Inferno poster and decided almost on impulse to apply. What sounded at first like a joke quickly turned into something much more real when she later received a phone call from the production team.

According to Somi, the moment happened during the period when the show was still auditioning contestants.
She recalled that one day, seemingly out of nowhere, she got a call from an unknown number while driving. When she answered, the caller asked, “Is this Jeon Somi?” and then introduced themselves as part of the Single’s Inferno team. That was when the playful application she had submitted suddenly stopped feeling so unserious.
Somi explained that she had actually gone through the application process and filled it out properly just in her own very Somi way.
She said the form required face and body photos, so she ended up taking them at the gym. Laughing about it, she shared that she even posed for the pictures and submitted them along with her information, including her name and her very real broadcast experience. That detail alone made the story funnier, because it sounds exactly like the kind of thing someone does half for fun and half out of curiosity without fully expecting anyone to call back.
But they did.

What made the story even better, according to Somi, was the reaction afterward.
She said that once the story got out, a lot of K-pop stars saw it and asked whether someone had actually submitted an application like that. Her answer was simple: yes it was really her.
That reaction seems to capture why the anecdote is landing so well. It feels both unexpected and perfectly on-brand at the same time. Somi is exactly the kind of star who could casually apply to a dating show out of curiosity, then laugh about it later when people realize she was serious.
In telling the story, Somi seemed most amused by one thing: that she genuinely did not think anyone on the production side would ever really see it. Instead, she ended up getting a callback from one of Korea’s most recognizable reality-dating franchises. That is what gives the story its charm. It is not just about Jeon Somi applying for Single’s Inferno. It is about how close a random, impulsive idea came to becoming a real alternate timeline in her career.
And as Somi herself put it, you really never know in life.
