The Return of the Leader: Lee Byung-hun as ‘Im Eok’

Lee Byung-hun will portray Im Eok, the stoic leader of the rescue party. Characterized by cool-headed judgment and unwavering conviction forged through countless battles, Im Eok is expected to be another career-defining role for Lee.

The actor, known globally for his roles in Squid Game, Concrete Utopia, and Inside Men, continues to showcase limitless range. Following his recent work in Park Chan-wook’s I Can’t Help It and his voice acting in Netflix’s K-Pop Demon Hunters, Lee’s return to a gritty, historical action setting is already generating massive industry buzz.

A Powerhouse Creative Alliance

Nambeol is particularly significant as it marks the directorial debut of Lee Mo-gae, the legendary cinematographer behind the stunning visuals of 12.12: The Day, Exhuma, and Hunt. His transition to the director’s chair, supported by Hive Media Corp—the hit-makers behind Inside Men and Deliver Us From Evil—suggests a film with unparalleled mise-en-scène and raw intensity.

This project reunites Lee Byung-hun with Hive Media Corp for the third time, following their massive successes with Inside Men and The Man Standing Next. With a cast of “9 warriors” yet to be fully revealed, the film is aiming to begin filming in the second half of 2026.
