MBC drama ‘Perfect Crown’ has officially apologized after becoming embroiled in a rapidly growing controversy surrounding historical distortion and cultural inaccuracies. On May 16, the production team released a formal apology through the drama’s official website following strong criticism from viewers over scenes aired in Episode 11.
The issue primarily centered around a royal coronation sequence involving Grand Prince Ian, played by Byeon Woo-seok, during his ascension to the throne.

The controversy exploded after audiences noticed that characters in the coronation scene shouted “Cheonse” instead of “Manse.”
Historically, “Cheonse” was considered a lower-ranking expression associated with feudal-level rulers beneath an emperor, while “Manse” represented sovereign authority. Viewers argued that using the term within the drama’s fictional constitutional monarchy setting unintentionally suggested Korea existed beneath a Chinese imperial hierarchy.
The production team also faced criticism over the use of a nine-beaded royal crown, which historically ranked below the twelve-beaded crown reserved for emperors.
For many Korean viewers, the combination of both details crossed beyond simple fictional interpretation and entered politically sensitive territory tied to national identity and historical sovereignty.
In their statement, the producers acknowledged the criticism and admitted they failed to carefully examine how Joseon-era ceremonial traditions evolved historically. The team explained that while ‘Perfect Crown’ was intended as an alternate-history romance drama blending fantasy with fictional political structures, they recognized that deeper consideration and more detailed world-building should have been applied when handling historically inspired elements.
The statement also confirmed that the controversial scenes would be edited for future rebroadcasts, VOD releases, and OTT streaming versions through audio and subtitle corrections where possible.

However, online criticism has continued growing because many viewers believe the drama has faced repeated cultural and historical inconsistencies throughout its run. Some audiences pointed to earlier scenes involving Chinese-style tea ceremony practices rather than Korean traditions, while others criticized the series for what they viewed as inconsistent world-building and weak historical logic overall.
As discussion spread across Korean online communities, reactions became increasingly divided.
Some viewers accepted the apology as a necessary correction, while others argued the production team only addressed part of the criticism and failed to fully acknowledge broader concerns surrounding the drama’s portrayal of Korean royal identity.
The controversy arrives at a complicated moment for ‘Perfect Crown.’
Internationally, the drama has become one of the year’s biggest Korean streaming successes, ranking highly across Disney+ global charts and generating major online buzz through its palace visuals, romance storyline, and IU and Byeon Woo-seok’s chemistry. But domestically, the backlash highlights how historical symbolism remains an especially sensitive issue in Korean entertainment, even within fictional or alternate-history works.
