Taeyang Says He Wanted to Feel “Most Like Himself” Again on New Album as BIGBANG Turns 20

On May 18, the BIGBANG member held a listening event in Seoul for his fourth full-length solo album ‘QUINTESSENCE’, marking his first solo studio album in approximately nine years and his first major solo comeback in three years. The release also arrives during one of the most symbolic years of his career: BIGBANG’s 20th anniversary.

Taeyang Says This Album Began With One Question

During the event, Taeyang revealed that the central idea behind the album was finding a way to remain authentic while still evolving artistically after two decades in the industry.

According to the singer, the biggest challenge was asking himself:

“What feels most like me now… while still being something new?”

He explained that after years of music releases and performances, continuously reinventing himself no longer felt simple. But rather than avoiding that pressure, he decided to build the album around those internal questions.

That process ultimately became the emotional foundation of ‘QUINTESSENCE’, a title referring to “essence” or “core nature.”

Why ‘LIVE FAST DIE SLOW’ Became the Title Track

The album contains 10 tracks spanning multiple genres, with Taeyang describing each song as worthy of being a title track.

However, he eventually chose ‘LIVE FAST DIE SLOW’ because he felt the song best represented both the album’s identity and his current state of mind. According to Taeyang, the lyrics especially reflected the thoughts and reflections he experienced while creating the project.

Rather than focusing only on flashy reinvention, the album appears to center on maturity, self-awareness, and artistic identity.

BIGBANG’s 20th Anniversary Is Shaping Everything

The timing of the release carries extra emotional weight because 2026 marks BIGBANG’s 20th debut anniversary.

Taeyang explained that the anniversary naturally influenced the way he approached the album, adding that this solo project would serve as the beginning of larger activities connected to BIGBANG’s milestone year. He also hinted that fans can expect more appearances and projects involving BIGBANG members moving forward.

That comment arrives shortly after BIGBANG officially reopened its V.I.P fan club recruitment for the first time in 11 years and confirmed upcoming anniversary world tour plans.
