Taemin Turns His Coachella Statement Into a New Single With ‘PERMISSION’

Taemin is officially turning one of his most talked-about Coachella moments into a full global release.

On May 22 at 1 p.m. KST, the SHINee member and solo artist released his new digital single ‘PERMISSION,’ a track he first revealed during his historic performance at the 2026 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

The song has already drawn attention because it is not only a new release, but also a personal declaration from Taemin himself.

‘PERMISSION’ Is a Declaration of Freedom

‘PERMISSION’ is built around a dark and sleek soundscape, with restrained rhythms, immersive vocals, and a slowly rising tension that reflects the emotional weight of the lyrics.

The repeated line “Don’t need no permission” carries the song’s central message: Taemin is no longer asking for approval.

This makes the track feel especially meaningful at this stage of his career. Rather than simply presenting another polished performance song, ‘PERMISSION’ works as an artistic statement about self-direction, independence, and breaking away from other people’s expectations.

Taemin also participated in writing the lyrics, adding a more autobiographical layer to the single.

From Coachella Buzz to Official Release

Taemin first performed ‘PERMISSION’ at Coachella, where he became the first Korean male solo artist to perform at the major U.S. festival.

His appearance created major buzz because he performed six unreleased songs, showcasing a bold new creative phase while demonstrating his signature stage control and performance intensity.

Now, with the official release of ‘PERMISSION,’ fans can finally hear one of the most discussed songs from that stage in full.

A Global Production Team Behind the Track

The single was produced by JORDi, who has worked with artists including David Guetta, Teddy Swims, Snoop Dogg, and Lil Baby. The writing team also includes JHart, known for collaborations with Justin Bieber, Young Thug, and aespa, as well as Rachel West and Taemin himself.

The album cover was reportedly inspired by the outfit Taemin wore during his Coachella performance, further tying the single visually and emotionally to the stage that first introduced it.

Why This Release Matters for Taemin

Taemin has long been recognized as one of K-pop’s most influential solo performers, but ‘PERMISSION’ feels like another turning point.

Following his first English digital single ‘Long Way Home’ in March, this release continues his push into the global market while maintaining the darker, performance-centered artistry that has defined his solo career.

‘PERMISSION’ may stand out because it connects three parts of Taemin’s identity at once: the performer who commands the stage, the artist who shapes his own narrative, and the global soloist who no longer needs permission to move forward.
