Na Hong-jin's 'Hope', despite a production cost of 60 billion won, experiences poor box office performance in its fourth week... sharp decline in audience numbers

Director Na Hong-jin’s film ″Hope″ attracted attention with a production budget of 60 billion won but has failed to maintain its initial box office momentum as it enters its fourth week since release. ″Hope″ had a smooth start, surpassing 1 million viewers within three days of release and reaching 2 million viewers faster than any other film released this year. However, weekend attendance in the second week dropped by about 49% compared to the first week, and in the third week, it decreased by another 56% from the previous week. Compared to the first weekend, the third weekend’s audience declined by approximately 77%. Reactions to the film were mixed. While some praised Na Hong-jin’s distinctive direction and worldview as ″the best movie of the year,″ many expressed disappointment with the long running time, heavy atmosphere, and narrative completeness. Online discussions interpreting the film’s setting and ending continued, and some viewers watched the film multiple times, but these conversations did not spread widely as popular word of mouth. The release of competing films also impacted the decline in box office performance. ″Spider-Man: Brand New Day,″ released on the 29th of last month, attracted attention before its release through large-scale marketing and fandom, drawing audiences early on who wanted to avoid spoilers. Christopher Nolan’s ″Odyssey,″ released on the same day, also divided demand for special screenings such as IMAX. Additionally, the screening of ″Love’s Hatchuping: The Legend of the Whale Jewel″ expanded options for family audiences. As a result, both adult and family viewers were dispersed across multiple films, further reducing the chances of a box office rebound for ″Hope.″ At the same time, controversy surrounding lead actor Hwang Jung-min’s private life added pressure to the film. However, it is known that the decline in ″Hope’s″ audience was already evident before the controversy arose. It is difficult to view Hwang Jung-min’s personal issues as the direct cause of the poor box office performance; rather, it is interpreted as an additional negative factor overlapping an already ongoing downward trend. Currently, ″Hope″ faces multiple challenges, including strong polarized opinions, aggressive competition from other films, and the lead actor’s personal controversy. Considering the enormous production budget and the initial box office speed, it is too early to declare the film a failure, but a clear rebound after the fourth week is necessary to surpass the break-even point.
