Sooyoung, Hyoyeon and Yuri Launch Girls’ Generation-HRS With First Festival Stage

Three Girls’ Generation Veterans Just Re-Debuted as a Sixth-Generation Girl Group

Nearly two decades after debuting with Girls’ Generation, Sooyoung, Hyoyeon and Yuri have returned to the starting line as members of a supposedly “sixth-generation” rookie group.

The trio, officially known as Girls’ Generation-HRS and nicknamed HyoRiSoo, presented its first festival stage at the 2026 CassCool Festival on August 22. Held at Seoul Land in Gwacheon, the performance arrived nine days before the unit’s debut single is scheduled to reach streaming platforms.

Following the show, Sooyoung shared backstage photographs with the caption, “How are you doing out there? Sixth-generation girl group HyoRiSoo debuted today.”

The members’ rookie positioning is intentionally playful. Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung debuted as part of Girls’ Generation in 2007 and have accumulated years of concert, television and solo experience. HyoRiSoo turns that seniority into its central joke, allowing three veterans to behave as though they are competing for positions in a newly formed idol group.

Sooyoung embraces a bolder Y2K performance look

For the first stage, Sooyoung wore a white cropped top with a red, navy and white ensemble built around low-rise denim and a visible branded waistband. The styling drew from the Y2K revival seen across recent K-pop fashion while creating a more casual festival image than Girls’ Generation’s coordinated group costumes.

Her backstage photographs showed the contrast between the polished performance and the trio’s relaxed chemistry. Sooyoung posed playfully in front of a dressing-room mirror before joining Hyoyeon and Yuri for group selfies behind the stage.

The clothing attracted immediate attention, but the larger story was not simply Sooyoung’s more daring styling. The festival marked the first public performance of a new Girls’ Generation unit that began as entertainment content and gradually developed into a real music project.

A joke between members became an official unit

HyoRiSoo originated from the “Fake Kim Hyoyeon” series on Hyoyeon’s YouTube channel, “Hyo’s Level Up.” The content followed Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung as they humorously competed over positions including center and main vocalist.

Instead of announcing a completed unit through a conventional press release, the three members allowed viewers to follow its creation. Their debates over roles, promotional opportunities and debut preparations became part of the group’s identity before any music was released.

The project later expanded beyond YouTube through television appearances and other promotional content. By presenting themselves as “experienced rookies,” the members created a format that depends on the audience already understanding their long history together.

It is a concept few genuine newcomers could reproduce. The comedy comes from watching performers with almost 20 years of experience pretend they still need to prove that they deserve a center position or a place on a music show.

CassCool offered the first preview of Skibidi

Girls’ Generation-HRS used the CassCool stage to unveil performances of both songs from its forthcoming digital single.

The title track, “Skibidi,” moves from house into hip-hop and incorporates Arabian-style string samples. According to information released ahead of the debut, its lyrics emphasize creating a new path rather than following an established formula.

The B-side, “Lowkey In Love,” takes a more retro dance-pop direction, combining brass instrumentation with a rhythmic groove and upbeat melody.

The festival performance gave audiences their first opportunity to hear and see the songs before their official release. The trio also performed familiar Girls’ Generation material, connecting the experimental rookie concept to the catalogue that made all three members recognizable.

HyoRiSoo expands Girls’ Generation’s unit legacy

Girls’ Generation has previously explored unit promotions through Girls’ Generation-TTS, featuring Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun, as well as the five-member Oh!GG lineup.

HyoRiSoo offers something structurally different. Its identity was developed through variety content and the members’ natural chemistry before being translated into music. The project feels less like a carefully protected extension of the Girls’ Generation brand and more like three longtime colleagues turning an inside joke into a fully produced release.

That approach also provides a flexible model for veteran idol groups. A complete Girls’ Generation comeback requires coordinating eight members with extensive careers across different agencies and entertainment fields. A smaller project can be developed more quickly while still giving fans new music and live performances involving multiple members.

The trio’s “sixth-generation” label may be a joke, but it reflects a genuine reinvention. Instead of relying only on nostalgia, Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung have adopted the promotional language of newer K-pop groups, including serialized content, role competition, meme-friendly branding and a pre-debut performance.

Girls’ Generation-HRS will officially release its two-track digital single “Skibidi” on August 31 at 6 p.m. KST. The CassCool appearance showed that HyoRiSoo may have started as comedy, but its music career is now real.
