TAEMIN’s Soft Violence Reaches No. 1 on Worldwide iTunes Album Chart

The SHINee artist’s first EP in two years pairs opposing title tracks, deeper creative control and a world tour built for his next phase.

TAEMIN has returned with an album built around contradiction, and listeners around the world are responding.

His new EP, PHASE 1: Soft Violence, rose to No. 1 on the Worldwide iTunes Album Chart following its August 31 release. It also entered the upper reaches of iTunes album charts across markets in South America, Europe and Asia, according to Galaxy Corporation.

The chart result gives the project an impressive opening, but Soft Violence is more interesting for what it reveals about TAEMIN himself.

Nearly two decades after debuting with SHINee, he is no longer simply interpreting a concept created for him. This time, he is taking greater control of the questions, emotions and contradictions behind the music.

What Does Soft Violence Mean?

The title joins two words that appear incompatible.

“Soft” suggests tenderness, beauty and intimacy. “Violence” suggests pain, force and destruction. Together, they describe the uncomfortable ways love, beauty and other people’s expectations can leave emotional wounds without looking violent from the outside.

TAEMIN has said that the album explores different forms of love, including affection for family, fans, pets and romantic partners. It also reflects on jealousy, criticism and the sadness people sometimes direct toward one another.

That tension is familiar territory for an artist whose work has repeatedly blurred boundaries between beauty and danger, innocence and temptation, or control and surrender.

Songs such as “MOVE,” “Criminal,” “Advice” and “Guilty” established TAEMIN as a performer who rarely presents desire as something simple. His music often becomes most compelling when attraction carries an element of discomfort.

Soft Violence develops that artistic language while allowing a more personal voice to emerge.

FLOAT and Gooey Show Opposite Sides of TAEMIN

The EP is led by two title tracks, “FLOAT” and “Gooey,” which TAEMIN has described as polar opposites.

That contrast reflects the album’s central idea. Instead of asking one song to represent the entire project, the two tracks create separate entry points into its world.

One emphasizes atmosphere and emotional suspension, while the other leans further into texture, physicality and performance. Together, they highlight the dual identity that has defined much of TAEMIN’s solo career: a vocalist capable of delicate emotional expression and a dancer who can transform even the smallest movement into tension.

The wider album includes “Let Me Be The One,” which attracted attention after its Coachella performance, the previously introduced “This Is The End,” and tracks including “Sober,” “1004,” “SKIN,” “PARASITE” and “Frankenstein.”

According to TAEMIN’s interview with People, he received songwriting or composition credits on nine of the project’s 11 tracks. He described the album as an authentic expression of his own thoughts and emotions.

A More Personal Kind of Creative Control

TAEMIN debuted with SHINee in 2008 at only 14 years old. He spent much of adolescence learning how to perform under intense public attention before launching his solo career with ACE in 2014.

That history makes his increased creative involvement particularly meaningful.

For years, TAEMIN has been recognized as one of K-pop’s most distinctive performers. Soft Violence asks audiences to look beyond the precision of his choreography and pay closer attention to what he wants to communicate.

He has also spoken candidly about separating his public image from his private identity. After growing up with expectations attached to nearly every stage of his life, he now appears more willing to accept that expressing himself honestly may not satisfy everyone.

That confidence changes the emotional weight of the album. Soft Violence is not simply another dark and sensual TAEMIN concept. It is the work of an experienced artist examining how love, judgment and fame have shaped him.

The Album Is Designed to Move Onto the Stage

TAEMIN will begin promoting the new music across Korean television music programs before opening his 2026–27 LiMiNaL world tour at Seoul’s Jamsil Indoor Stadium from September 18 to 20.

The official tour schedule currently includes stops across North America, Latin America and Europe, with concerts announced in cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Mexico City, São Paulo, Paris, London and Amsterdam.

For an artist whose songs often reveal their full meaning through choreography, the tour will serve as the next chapter of the album rather than a simple promotional extension.

The No. 1 iTunes result shows that global interest is already present. The greater question is how TAEMIN will translate the emotional opposites of Soft Violence into movement.

If his past performances are any indication, the answer will probably exist somewhere between beauty and danger.
