BTS’s “SWIM” Ranks Among Billboard’s Biggest Global Songs of Summer 2026

The ARIRANG lead single ranked No. 6 globally and No. 2 outside the United States after spending months near the top of Billboard’s international charts.

“SWIM” Became a Summer Hit Without Waiting for Summer

BTS released “SWIM” on March 20, but nearly six months later, the song has officially earned a place among the defining global hits of summer 2026.

Billboard ranked “SWIM” at No. 6 on its year-end Global Songs of the Summer chart based on the Global 200. The track performed even better on the corresponding Global Excl. U.S. ranking, where it finished at No. 2.

The achievement reflects more than a powerful release week driven by anticipation for BTS’s reunion. “SWIM” remained near the top of the global charts throughout the entire summer tracking period, showing sustained listening across multiple continents.

According to BigHit Music, Billboard’s seasonal ranking combines chart performance between June 6 and September 12. The Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts use streaming and sales data collected by Luminate from more than 200 territories.

In other words, “SWIM” did not make the list because of one explosive debut. Listeners kept returning to it week after week.

Eight Weeks at No. 1 Outside the United States

“SWIM” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Global Excl. U.S. chart eight times during the summer tracking period and remained inside its top five for 23 consecutive weeks.

On the Global 200, which includes activity from the United States, the song spent four weeks at No. 1 and remained in the top 10 for 19 weeks.

That distinction helps explain the size of the song’s international reach.

The Global 200 measures worldwide consumption, while Global Excl. U.S. removes American data to show what audiences in the rest of the world are streaming and purchasing. Ranking No. 2 on the summer edition of the latter chart means “SWIM” was one of the season’s most consistently popular songs across BTS’s vast international markets.

The group’s performance was not limited to regions traditionally associated with K-pop fandom. “SWIM” also reached the top of national charts in markets including Germany and Brazil and gave BTS its highest position to date on the United Kingdom’s Official Singles Chart.

BTS Returned With More Than a Reunion Song

The scale of the success matters because “SWIM” introduced BTS’s first full-group album era following the members’ military service.

A reunion single could have relied heavily on nostalgia. Instead, “SWIM” was designed around movement, resilience and the decision to continue forward even when the destination remains uncertain.

Its title proved especially adaptable during the warmer months. The ocean imagery, fluid choreography and bright pop production allowed it to function naturally as a summer track, even though it had arrived at the beginning of spring.

The song also offered fans a message that felt appropriate for BTS’s return. After several years of individual activities and military enlistments, all seven members were moving together again.

The world did not simply welcome them back for one week. It continued “swimming” with them through the season.

A Historic Start on Billboard

“SWIM” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming BTS’s seventh chart-topper in the United States.

The achievement also marked the sixth time a BTS song had entered the Hot 100 directly at No. 1. Billboard reported that the track’s opening numbers included 15.3 million U.S. streams, an airplay audience of 25.8 million and 154,000 sales.

During the same week, ARIRANG debuted atop the Billboard 200.

It was only the second time BTS had simultaneously led Billboard’s main albums and singles charts. The group first accomplished the feat in 2020 when BE and “Life Goes On” reached No. 1 together.

This time, the momentum lasted longer. ARIRANG remained at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for three consecutive weeks, becoming the longest-running chart leader by a group in more than a decade, according to Billboard.

The Entire ARIRANG Era Became a Global Event

“SWIM” may be the album’s most visible single, but its success formed part of a much larger chart takeover.

When ARIRANG debuted, its songs occupied all 10 leading positions on Billboard’s Global Excl. U.S. chart. It was the first time one artist had filled the entire top 10 with tracks from a single album.

Nine songs from the record also appeared inside the Global 200’s top 10.

That opening week captured the intensity of BTS’s return, but the later performance of “SWIM” may be even more revealing. Initial chart domination can reflect anticipation, coordinated listening and the enormous purchasing power of an established fandom.

Remaining near the top for an entire season requires a song to continue circulating well beyond its first release moment.

ARIRANG Is Still Charting Nearly Six Months Later

The album has displayed similar longevity.

On the Billboard 200 dated September 12, ARIRANG rose two positions to No. 29. It has now remained on the chart for 24 consecutive weeks.

That means the album has spent almost half a year among the most popular releases in the United States, even as newer records continuously enter the ranking.

Its three-week run at No. 1 was historic, but its ability to remain visible months afterward shows that the comeback has developed into a sustained album cycle rather than a short-lived chart event.

From the Guggenheim to a Global Summer Soundtrack

BTS introduced “SWIM” through performances designed to emphasize its sense of movement and renewal.

The group performed the song at New York’s Guggenheim Museum for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, turning the museum’s spiral architecture into part of the stage. They also released a performance filmed at Sunhye Won, a historic Korean hanok, connecting the song’s global scale with a distinctly Korean setting.

“SWIM” then became part of BTS’s ARIRANG world tour, allowing fans to experience the song in stadiums rather than only through streams.

These settings gave the track several visual identities. It could belong on the ocean, inside a modern museum, at a traditional Korean residence or before tens of thousands of fans.

That flexibility helped the song remain present as the album era expanded.

A Song That Outlasted Its Comeback Moment

BTS’s return was always expected to produce enormous first-week numbers. The more difficult question was what would happen once the initial celebration ended.

“SWIM” has now provided an answer.

It topped the global charts repeatedly, remained in their upper reaches for months and finished as one of Billboard’s biggest worldwide songs of summer 2026.

For ARMY, it may have begun as the soundtrack to BTS’s long-awaited reunion.

By the end of summer, it had become a song the rest of the world was still playing too.
