“The Lawyer Who Threw Her Out of Court” Is Now Her Rival: Lee Bo-young vs. Kang Tae-oh Heats Up ENA

ENA has lined up a courtroom collision that’s as much about reinvention as it is about law a single mom chasing a fresh start versus the undefeated lawyer who once threw her out of court.

Picture the setup: a divorced mother of three, starting over in a courthouse career, comes face to face with the slick, undefeated attorney who once dismantled her in that very arena the lawyer who represented her ex-husband. That’s the central spark of ENA’s upcoming drama Divorce Investigator Hong Mal-geum, and on October 6, the network confirmed the two names who’ll carry it: Lee Bo-young and Kang Tae-oh. On paper, it’s a casting announcement. In practice, it’s a promise of friction and a fascinating pivot for both stars.

The premise: a courtroom drama with a human heart

Divorce Investigator Hong Mal-geum follows a single mother of three who, after her own marriage falls apart, passes the exam to become a domestic relations investigator at family court a tenured, stable position that offers her a lifeline. From there, she wades into a parade of family cases, searching for the truth and the thread of reconciliation buried inside each one.

It’s a format with real appeal. Rather than the high-gloss corporate litigation that dominates most Korean legal dramas, this one roots itself in family court the messiest, most emotionally raw corner of the legal system, where custody battles, betrayals, and quiet heartbreaks play out. The production team has promised a “well-made” work that will “make you laugh out loud, then burrow deep into your heart, leaving you waiting for the next episode.” The blend of comedy, case-of-the-week structure, and ongoing emotional throughline is a proven recipe and family court gives it endless raw material.

Lee Bo-young, back in her element

For Lee Bo-young, Hong Mal-geum is familiar territory in the best way. One of Korea’s most reliably excellent dramatic actresses, she has long specialized in characters who combine warmth with steel ordinary women pushed into extraordinary circumstances. Her breakout turns in I Can Hear Your Voice and My Daughter Seo-young established her as a performer who can anchor a series emotionally, and she has since built a reputation for elevating any material she touches.

A single mother clawing her way into a new career, juggling three kids and a courthouse full of other people’s broken marriages, is exactly the kind of role that plays to her strengths: resilience under pressure, dignity in struggle, and the ability to make an audience root for her from the first frame. This marks another television return for an actress whose presence alone signals a project worth watching.

Kang Tae-oh’s bold reinvention

The more intriguing casting, though, is Kang Tae-oh. To global audiences, he will forever be Lee Jun-ho the gentle, endlessly supportive boyfriend from the 2022 mega-hit Extraordinary Attorney Woo, the role that made him an international star just before he enlisted for mandatory military service in September 2022. He was discharged in 2024, and since then fans have watched closely to see what he’d choose for his post-service act.

The answer is a sharp left turn. Here, Kang plays Charles Kim, a lawyer with a “100% win rate” a cold, calculating courtroom predator. And in a wickedly clever bit of writing, his character is the very attorney who represented Hong Mal-geum’s ex-husband, the man who, by one account, left her thrown out of court “with nothing but the clothes on her back.” There’s an added layer, too: the two characters are linked through a past relationship, giving their on-screen antagonism a charged, personal undercurrent.

For an actor whose fame rests on being the sweetest man in the room, deliberately choosing a role defined by ruthlessness and swagger is a statement. It’s the kind of pivot that can redefine a career think of how often a beloved “nice guy” actor breaks out to a new level precisely by playing against type. If Kang nails the dual charm the production team is teasing the charisma underneath the calculation this could be the role that proves he’s far more than Attorney Woo’s boyfriend.

Why this pairing matters

The production team called the Lee Bo-young and Kang Tae-oh meeting “more than just reassuring,” predicting their shared narrative will “exceed viewers’ expectations.” The confidence is understandable. You have a seasoned emotional anchor opposite a popular young star hungry to reinvent himself, placed on opposite sides of a courtroom with a tangled history between them. That’s built-in chemistry and built-in conflict the two ingredients every character-driven drama needs.

Divorce Investigator Hong Mal-geum is slated to air on ENA in the first half of next year, with streaming available through Genie TV. If the writing lives up to its premise tender family stories wrapped around a crackling central rivalry this could be one of the more quietly compelling dramas of 2027. And for Kang Tae-oh, it may be the moment he steps out of one iconic role and into a whole new kind of spotlight.
