Luxury brands, reinvention, and the hunger to become “real” these are the themes driving Netflix’s globally trending series The Art of Sarah. But for Shin hye-sun, the story goes far beyond designer fashion.
In a recent interview, the actress opened up about her character’s obsession with status — and shared her own honest perspective on luxury and self-worth.
In The Art of Sarah, shin hye-sun plays Sara Kim, the head of a luxury brand branch in Seoul’s affluent Cheongdam district. Beneath the polished image lies a woman who repeatedly alters her identity in pursuit of becoming someone “authentic.”
“When I first read the script, I couldn’t understand her emotional line at all,” shin hye-sun said. “That actually made me want to challenge myself.”
The character’s psychological instability driven by deep internal deficiency became one of the most intriguing aspects of the series.

The drama has drawn attention not only for its mystery plot but also for shin hye-sun’s striking styling. Each episode features dramatically different luxury looks, prompting praise across social media and online communities.
She redirected the compliments to the production team.
“The positive reactions make our styling director so excited every day,” she said with a laugh. “It’s not that I’m beautiful — it’s that the character’s narrative is expressed through how she presents herself.”
The styling, she explained, helped define the emotional layers of Sara Kim’s transformation.

Because The Art of Sarah explores vanity and desire symbolized by high-end fashion, shin hye-sun was asked about her own relationship with luxury brands.
“I know more about them now, but in my 20s I had no interest,” she admitted. “Looking back, I think it was because I couldn’t afford them, so I tried not to care.”
She expressed respect for the craftsmanship and rarity associated with luxury brands but drew a firm line regarding personal validation.
“Trying to prove your value through luxury feels twisted.”

Her comment struck a nerve online.
In the entertainment industry, luxury brand partnerships are often treated as status markers — symbols of success and prestige. Red carpet appearances and ambassadorships frequently shape public perception of a star’s position.
What stands out in shin hye-sun’s remarks is not criticism of luxury itself, but a critique of the mindset behind it.
She separates appreciation from dependence.
The actress also reflected on the intense competition within the entertainment industry.
“It’s fast-moving and filled with talented people. There are times when unrealistic dreams of becoming someone dazzling grow bigger,” she said.
Unlike her character Sara Kim, however, shin hye-sun believes she has learned not to become consumed by that sense of lack.
Her reunion with actor Lee Jun Hyuk — eight years after Stranger — has also been praised. She described him as someone who helps her see projects from a broader audience perspective.
At first glance, The Art of Sarah may appear to be a drama about luxury and status.
But shin hye-sun’s interpretation reframes it as something deeper: a story about insecurity, identity, and the danger of tying self-worth to external symbols.
In today’s image-driven culture, her words feel especially timely.
