When aespa’s Ningning casually revealed her weight during a livestream, the moment quickly turned into a much bigger conversation online.
The idol shared that she weighs 41 kg (about 90 lbs) at a height of 161 cm, surprising many fans and reigniting debate about body expectations in the K-pop industry.

During a recent live broadcast, Ningning was chatting with fans when someone asked about her weight.
Instead of answering immediately, she first joked and told viewers to guess. Ningning then playfully said “55 kg”, before a staff member nearby responded that it could not possibly be that much and guessed “around 40 kg.”
Ningning eventually confirmed the number herself.
“Does weight even matter?” she said during the broadcast, before adding, “It’s 41 kg. Am I allowed to say that?”
The unexpected answer quickly spread across social media.

Despite revealing the number, Ningning also pushed back against the idea that thinness should define beauty.
“Everyone just needs to be healthy,” she told fans. “Being skinny isn’t what makes someone pretty.”
She added that she has been exercising regularly and plans to focus on building muscle.
The aespa member debuted with the group in 2020 and recently traveled to Milan for Gucci’s fashion week events.
Online reactions quickly became divided.
Some fans focused on how unrealistic idol body standards can feel.
One user wrote, “55 kg for some people is already considered underweight,” while another commented bluntly, “Idols are all malnourished.”
Others questioned whether the number even reflects her current condition. Several posts suggested that Ningning might weigh more now, with one fan writing that she is “definitely more than that.”
There were also comments defending her reaction during the livestream. Some fans argued that Ningning may have been joking because she had previously been criticized for her weight earlier in her career.
“She was bullied for being 55 kg before,” one comment noted, suggesting the moment might reflect past pressure rather than a serious statement.
The discussion highlights a long running issue within K-pop.
Extreme thinness has often been treated as a professional expectation for idols, especially female performers. Even small fluctuations in weight can trigger intense public scrutiny.
From a global perspective, the number Ningning shared sparked concern among some fans. But within Korea’s idol industry, very slim body types are often associated with discipline, image management, and camera aesthetics.
That contrast is exactly why moments like this quickly turn into larger debates online.
For many fans, Ningning’s comment was just a casual livestream moment. But the intense reaction around it shows how sensitive and complicated conversations about body standards in K-pop remain.
