Byeon Woo-seok is stepping into one of the most layered and complex roles of his career and it’s a character he says he had to take. The actor will star as Grand Prince Ian in MBC’s upcoming drama ‘Perfect Crown’, a role defined by restraint, isolation, and inner conflict.

Following his breakout success in ‘Lovely Runner’, Byeon Woo-seok’s next move has been closely watched. And for him, the decision came down to one thing: connection.
“When I read the script, I could clearly imagine myself as Ian,” he shared. “It resonated with me emotionally. I knew I really wanted to take on this role.”
The drama’s unique premise set in a modern constitutional monarchy also played a major part in his choice, offering a setting rarely explored in K-dramas.
Grand Prince Ian is not a typical royal character. As the second son of the royal family, he lives under strict limitations someone who cannot stand out, cannot speak freely, and must constantly maintain composure.
Byeon Woo-seok described the character with three key words: solitude, dignity and “a prince loved by the people”
“He seems like someone who has everything,” Byeon explained, “but in truth, he has no one he can truly rely on.”
Portraying Ian required a careful balance.
“He’s a character who can’t show weakness,” Byeon said. “So I focused on expressing subtle emotions within that restraint.”
Rather than dramatic expressions, the performance relies on nuance small shifts in emotion that reveal the character’s inner conflict.

The drama’s romance is also expected to play a central role. Byeon Woo-seok expressed confidence in how the story unfolds, saying the script alone convinced him that the emotional depth of Ian’s relationship would naturally come through.
Beyond its characters, ‘Perfect Crown’ is set to deliver a visually rich experience. Byeon Woo-seok highlighted the production’s attention to detail, from set design to artistic direction, emphasizing that the drama offers more than just narrative it builds a fully realized world. From a rising global star to an actor taking on more complex, restrained roles, Grand Prince Ian may mark a turning point in how his career is defined.
Set to premiere on April 10 at 9:40 p.m. KST, ‘Perfect Crown’ is already generating anticipation.
