"Odyssey" breaks director Nolan's best record... 7 million domestic viewers and global success

The movie ″Odyssey″ has surpassed 7 million viewers domestically since its release and is now approaching 8 million viewers. This work has also broken director Christopher Nolan’s highest record in terms of global revenue. The original work, Homer’s ″Odyssey,″ has also invigorated the cultural and arts market overall, with book sales increasing by about 600% according to Kyobo Bookstore. Before the Korean release of ″Odyssey,″ symbolic scenes such as Agamemnon’s helmet and the back view of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon) confronting giant soldiers were revealed, raising audience expectations. In particular, the scene where Odysseus faces off against the giant soldiers was cited as a reason to watch it in IMAX theaters. Director Christopher Nolan prefers a working method that minimizes the use of computer graphics (CG), and in this work, he utilized height differences to emphasize the contrast between giants and humans. Actors over 2 meters tall were cast as giants, and Odysseus was played by a female actor about 137 cm tall. Stunt acting for Odysseus was performed by Devin Dalton, and Matt Damon stated, ″(Devin Dalton has) the coolest arms I’ve ever seen.″ Charlize Theron also expressed admiration for Devin Dalton’s muscles. Devin Dalton (35), from Canada, began acting at age 9 as an actor, voice actor, and dancer, and built a career as a stunt performer. In ″War for the Planet of the Apes″ (2017), he performed motion capture acting as Cornelius. He shared that he questioned, ″Why is the male body symbolizing strength praised, but the same female body is not?″ In a meeting with ″Civilization Express″ MC Jaejae, Devin Dalton said, ″It was a demanding role, but I wanted to show everyone that I could do it.″ For the role of Odysseus, he underwent intensive swordsmanship training and muscle building, and set his acting direction according to the character’s nature as a ″warrior.″ He explained, ″Odysseus is a warrior, so he knows well what he must do and does not hesitate in his actions. He has the duty to protect his subordinates. His emotions and intentions are clear, which helped me better understand the character’s movements.″ Additionally, instead of the elegance and grace traditionally required of ″female action″ roles, he showed sharp and intense movements. Despite facing prejudice that ″the roles a short woman can play are limited″ due to his height of 137 cm, Devin Dalton has worked to break down those boundaries. Director Steven Spielberg praised him, saying, ″Devin is the most diligent and talented person I have ever met.″ Devin Dalton emphasized, ″It is very important to show various types of people in movies,″ adding, ″I have a slightly different body type from others, but once I started using that to my advantage, I gained more opportunities. Even if you have something different about you, I hope you accept it as it is. There is no need to try to change yourself or fit in with others.″
