SHANGHAI, Sept. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- A full-immersion showcase of Chinese culture is going viral in Shanghai. Billed as China's first large-scale cultural experience bringing together Chinese heritage and cultures from around the world, the Grand Yuyuan Music & Heritage Festival opened in late September at the Grand Yuyuan cultural district, a prominent cultural, retail, and tourism destination encompassing Yuyuan Tourist Mart and The Bund Finance Center (BFC), operated by Shanghai Fosun Bund Commercial Co., Ltd.

As the must-visit stop for international travelers exploring Shanghai, Grand Yuyuan has launched an immersive cultural check-in journey themed Eastern Opera Meets Western Beats, offering a 58-day celebration running through November 15 for visitors from around the globe. Here, centuries-old gardens meet the modern Bund skyline, and traditional opera shares the stage with electronic music—a striking contrast drawing travelers from around the world.
Opening night recreated "Moon-wandering," an ancient Mid-Autumn custom. Performers dressed in traditional attire carried Chinese lanterns through glowing gray-brick lanes, making every step photo-worthy. At Yuyuan, a floating stage was built beside the Jiuqu Bridge, framed by upturned eaves and rippling water, where traditional opera vocals met new-generation guofeng—a contemporary Chinese-inspired music style.
Under the same night sky, BFC's riverfront terrace—a trendsetting destination on the Bund—stages an East-meets-West cultural exchange. Against the glittering Lujiazui skyline, its outdoor stage becomes an immersive music venue where traditional opera intertwines with modern electronic beats. Set in the river breeze, this avant-garde riverside music event is becoming a popular nighttime stop for young people exploring Shanghai.

Over the 58-day run, performances extend from dedicated stages into the city's streets and lanes. Yuyuan presents crossovers between lyrical traditional opera and pop-inflected guofeng, while experimental Shanghai-style performances connect with traditional folk arts. BFC will also host a rotating lineup of world music: French jazz, Brazilian folk-pop, Colombian Latin electronica, and Neapolitan songs.
BFC's international culture weeks bring together exhibitions, weekend markets, craft workshops, and cultural talks, creating a rich and varied cultural experience. From October 15 to November 1, Latin American Culture Week will feature the second Bund Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Carnival, Day of the Dead bread-making workshops, Latin music nights, and a Mexican film series. From November 2 to 15, Italian Culture Week will follow, featuring contemporary art, heritage crafts, and premium lifestyle design, with workshops and live performances.
Yuyuan will also host themed markets celebrating the folk cultures of northwest and southwest China, following a "one theme per week, one county per market" model. Visitors can watch Chinese opera, try a range of traditional crafts, and sample regional specialties. Yuyuan's time-honored brands have created limited-edition culture-themed set menus in collaboration with Chinese intangible-heritage inheritors. As visitors wander the lanes, they may encounter character performers who tell stories and high-energy dance battles, adding to the immersive atmosphere.
Building on Shanghai's rich cultural foundation, Yuyuan aims to become a hub for Chinese cultural innovation. Together with BFC's role as a global platform for cultural dialogue, Grand Yuyuan seeks to ground Chinese culture in its local setting while opening it to exchange with the world. Through 58 consecutive days of programming, it creates a stylish stage where Chinese culture meets cultures from around the world. This immersive experience continues to attract young visitors globally for a "ChinaMaxxing" journey—an all-in immersion in Chinese culture.
