The emotional hero of 'Odyssey'... The old dog Argos and his special bond with Odysseus

The dog ″Argos″ featured in the movie ″Odyssey″ leaves a deep impression on the audience. ″Argos″ is the hunting dog personally chosen by ″Odysseus″ in the film, and the special bond between the two characters begins from the very start of the movie. In the film, ″Odysseus″ has his first encounter with ″Argos″ during the process of selecting a hunting dog puppy among the litter with ″Eumaeus″ (John Leguizamo), choosing ″Argos,″ who was about to be left behind. Over many years, while ″Odysseus″ is away from Ithaca and unable to return, ″Argos″ waits for his master and grows old. A particularly iconic scene is when only ″Argos″ immediately recognizes the disguised ″Odysseus″ upon his return. The sight of ″Argos″ wagging his tail with all his remaining strength to greet his master before quietly closing his eyes moved the audience to tears. Director Christopher Nolan cast a 15-year-old veteran dog actor named ″Sawyer″ for this scene. ″Sawyer″ has appeared in various works and commercials such as ″Call of the Wild″ and ″Shameless,″ and although he was enjoying retirement in his old age, he returned to the camera for ″Odyssey.″ Through training, ″Sawyer″ performed a dramatic act by slightly raising his head and cautiously wagging his tail after recognizing his master. Additionally, a behind-the-scenes story related to Christopher Nolan’s actual dog ″Charlie″ was revealed. The director began raising a dog for the first time after his children went to college and stated, ″’Odyssey’ is the ultimate dog movie. Only after becoming a dog owner was I able to properly prepare the ultimate dog movie.″ It is also reported that the working title of the script during production was ″Charlie’s Tale,″ named after his dog.
